All I Want for Christmas…is a Book Trailer

The more I see book trailers, the more I want one!  So when my youngest son asked what I wanted for Christmas, the answer was simple…a book trailer!  I’ve spent countless hours on the internet this month viewing videos.  Here are three sites I’ve visited: BookScreening.com, AuthorIsland.com, and Book-Trailers.net.  At the risk of stating the obvious, the very best book trailers are ones that have already been made into movies such as Tell No One by Harlen Coben or The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo by Stieg Larsson.

However, if you search the internet for book trailers of popular Young Adult novels, you’ll find pages of amateur videos.  The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins is a perfect example.  I stopped on page 50 of my Google search.  Yes, more than 50 pages of video…and most of them created by teens.  Some of these amateur trailers are on par or better than ones I’ve seen by fellow authors in the links above and some of these teen trailers have over 500,000 views!  (Compared to 176 views for my 22 seconds of television fame on YouTube.)

Now, these teens have a few advantages over my fellow authors and me.  First, they aren’t in fear of prosecution of copyright infringements (when they pirate footage from other movies or music) for their Freshman English Project.  Second, the majority of them are exponentially more technically savvy than my generation.  (Wow, that phrase makes me sound old!)  And third, they aren’t worried if their acting comes across a bit…ah, schmaltzy.

Schmaltzy acting or not, I’d be thrilled to have even one Google page of amateur trailers for my novel!  (Hint, hint)  Unfortunately Merciful Law is not in the YA genre and so far, a video/trailer hasn’t been any teen’s English project.  And although there are still a few days until Christmas, I’m doubtful Santa’s elves or my teens are producing a book trailer for my stocking.

Even without a book trailer, Christmas will be bursting full of many blessings.  I wish each and every one of you a Merry Christmas and a very Happy Hanukkah.  May your lives be very blessed as well.
